New traffic lights, sidewalks coming to parts of Arlington

The Arlington County Board approved several construction projects Saturday, including new traffic signals and street lights. The board also approved a price hike for the Ballston Public Parking Garage.

The Arlington County Board awarding a $1 million dollar contract Saturday for upgrades on Columbia Pike between Route 7 and Washington Boulevard. New LED streetlights are set to go in starting next month, which are meant to make things safer.

The contract went to the Virginia-based company Electrifiers Inc.

The board also approved a $2.8 million contract for improvements along North Glebe Road between Fairfax Drive and Carlin Springs Road, and Fairfax Drive between North Wakefield Street and North Glebe Road.

The B&B Signal Company, LLC will construct the new lights and sidewalks along those stretches.

The Arlington County Board voting to raise rates a dollar or two and to cut weekend discounts starting in May at the Ballston Public Parking Garage. Some stores there have to agree, but you'll still be able to park for up to three hours for just $1, which board members say is cheaper than on the street.

Spring isn't here yet, but some QC business owners are already seeing construction cones.  They think city improvements may be a set back for them financially.

Moline city leaders said 5th Avenue will get more upgrades starting the end of next month.  Some downtown business owners said that could mean another summer of hassles.

City leaders said phase two of the project will bring new street landscaping, planters and LED street lights.  But some folks said they're mostly excited to have on–street parking again.

"People aren't walking from the parking lots out to the businesses," said barber Jeff Thomas.

But business owners who wouldn't speak on camera said the project between 17th and 19th Streets is going to cost them.  They're worried five months of construction will keep people away.  Indian Rasoi manager, Jade Lopez said businesses are already working hard to beef up Moline's downtown image.

"When you go out and you hear people talking about going out, you don't really hear people able saying, lets go to downtown Moline.  We'd like to see more people come down here and I just have a lot of friends that won't cross the river, or just don't really have a reason to," Lopez said.

City leaders said the project will cost more than a million dollars.  But barber Jeff Thomas said it's worth it.

"No, the dirt and that, you know you've gotta put up with it for improvement.  So, you might as well just go and get 'er done," Thomas said.

Moline city leaders said customers will need to use the alleys closest to those businesses once construction starts.
